Banner Tutorial :]

First you'll pic out whatever picture you want, I recommend at least a medium quality image.

I, of course, shall be using this one of Lady GaGa:

I pasted the picture onto a black 620x400 canvas:

Now here comes the coloring.

1. Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Selective Coloring

Reds: 0, +2, +100, +57

Cyans: +100, -100, +96, 0

Blues: +2, -99, +100, +100

Neutrals: -50, +13, +53, 0

2. Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels

Input: 0, 0.75, 218

Output: 31, 215

3. Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Channel Mixer

Red: +68, +10, +28

Green: -24, +132, -8

Blue: -36, +42, +100

4. Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Color Balance

Midtones: +5, +35, +4

Shadows: -15, -28, +8

Highlights: +3, 0, -26

5. Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Selective Coloring

Blacks: 0, 0, 0, +35

6. Layer > New Fill Layer > Fill with #223C5F and set to Exclusion at 50%

You should now have this:

Set the exclusion layer's eye to closed:

Now press Ctrl+A to select the banner and with the top selective color selected to go Edit > Copy Merged > Ctrl+V

Now that you've done that, drag the new layer to the top, click the Exclusion's layer's eye to make the layer visible again and set the new layer to Color

This is what your layer palette should look like now:

And this is what the banner should currently look like:

Now press Ctrl+A, go to Edit > Copy Merged > Ctrl+V

Set this layer to Lighten and drag it to where it overlaps with the base like so:

Now take this texture and paste it over the banner and set it to Soft Light

Now here comes the effect:

Press Ctrl+A > Edit > Copy Merged > Ctrl+V

Now drag the new top layer over and down a bit like so:

Now, on your toolbar you need to right click the lasso tool and select the polygonal tool:

Here is where results may vary, make zig selections with the tool and delete the selections to make something like this:

Repeat the process only put the new layer somewhere else (I put mine over to the top right):

From there I had put a fill layer with the color #484848 and set it to Exclusion at 100%

Then I took the very first copy merged layer:

dragged it to the top and set it to Lighten over to the side, erased the diamond by her face to make her blend in better and erased the exlusion later off of her.

Now add text and a border and you're finished :]

Except for the pictures looking a little low quality, you did a great job with the effect =D

Hey I tried this out. I don't use Photoshop--I have Adobe Elements, but this is what I came up with altering things a bit;;

Also, what are the names of the fonts you used?
Missing Lullaby[info]missingxlullaby on July 8th, 2009 02:08 am (UTC)
Rage Italic is the name of the font ;D Thanks for trying my tut!

thank you so much!

It was a fun tut. I just wished I had the pen tool so I could do all the cool cut up pieces like in yours! :)
